Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance says rottweilers are the most expensive dogs to treat
Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance recently claimed that Rottweilers are the most expensive type of dog for vet treatment. Based on real claim figures, Rottweilers cost an average of £441 to treat. This is:
• 32% more than the average for pedigree dogs
• 61% more than the average for a West Highland (£271)
The supermarket insurer has therefore warned customers to consider all cost implications of owning a new pet, and especially for large breed dogs. But cat enthusiasts should feel concerned too as the cost of veterinary treatment for a Maine Coon averages £487 which is:
• 40% more than the average for all cats
• almost 50% more than the average for a Persian
Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance Manager Neal Devine said: “The average cost of treating different breeds can be huge, but many people don’t consider the likely difference in cost between different breeds before buying a pet. We would urge people to look at all the costs they could face, from food to veterinary fees, before choosing a pet. Pet owners are well advised to protect themselves from unexpected vet costs by making sure they have good quality pet insurance cover.”
When choosing pet insurance, take into account your budget but also the expected costs of treating your companion: you know that cat costs way less than dogs, so you can opt for a plan to covers the essentials (see cheap pet insurance). On the other hand, generally, the bigger the dog, the bigger the vet bill. In that case, you may want to look at comprehensive lifelong dog insurance, which may be more relevant.
