The Pet Travel Scheme

The U.K. have historically been very protective over the re-entry of animals in the country as they’ve strived to eliminate rabies. This led to quarantine periods of up to 6 months for some animals and discouraged owners to take their pets on their overseas travel. Since 2000 however has been introduced the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS). The PETS allows your to take you pet abroad and back into the UK without having to quarantine it provided you follow some simple procedures. More information on the PETS.

Overseas travel pet insurance

If you definitely want to travel with your pet, then you may want to cover your dog or cat against emergency vet care abroad. Should your pet suffer an injury or develop an illness that requires emergency treatment, overseas pet insurance would reimburse the bill up to your level of cover. Beyond emergency vet fees, some companies also protect you against unexpected quarantine costs should your pet be denied re-entry in the UK, and against the loss of your pet passport (required under PETS).
