What Does Home Insurance Have To Do With My Shoes?
They may not cost a million bucks, but a great pair of designer shoes can make you feel like they did. |
There’s nothing like a $300 pair of Jimmy Choos or $600 Gucci loafers to make your feet feel like a million bucks. You might even say it’s a great investment in your future! After all, didn’t someone say that the shoes make the man? (Or was that clothes? Anyway…) For some people, shoes like that are a once in a lifetime investment, but it’s considered fairly uncouth to go digging through the hall closet for a pair of shoes when your house is burning down around your ears. What would you do if your favorite Dolce & Gabbana boots were trapped in the inferno?
That’s why you have home insurance.
You didn’t know you could insure your shoes with your home insurance company? Dahhhling, if you play

Silent film star Ben Turpin had his crossed eyes insured for $25,000 (a hefty sum of money in those days) in the event they should come uncrossed for one reason or another. And you thought insuring your shoes was odd! |
your cards right you can insure absolutely anything in your house with your insurance provider. If you’re willing to pay the premiums and the deductibles, insurance companies are willing to put up the coverage. It’s what they do best.
Did you know that a man once insured an entire box of Cuban cigars? Of course, he also went to jail for insurance fraud for smoking them and then claiming they were destroyed in a series of small fires, but that isn’t the point! Your computer, your television, your Victorian fainting couch, your camera and yes, even your Dolce & Gabbanas are all on their can-do list.
You probably (hopefully) knew this already, but did you know that your home insurance rates also cover the cost of insuring our outbuildings and outdoor furniture? Every company has their own policy when it comes to insuring patio “stuff,” but it’s a pretty safe bet that the big boy toy (read: $800 grill) you bought last summer just because you could (and because you finally had a place to enjoy it) is going to be insurable. As is the back shed you built to hold your bikes, the fully insulated playhouse you built for the kids and the giant swingset that takes up half of your backyard.
If it’s on your property, chances are you’re going to be able to insure it.
Most home insurance agents give you a couple of choices when it comes to insuring your property. You’ll have the option of asking for contents replacement either for the cash value you paid when you bought them or the replacement value of that far off day in the future when you’re going to have to buy/build another one. The difference? Inflation. It’s as simple as that.
So what does your home insurance have to do with your shoes? Don’t think of it as insuring your footwear. Think of it as insuring your investment in your future-and the continuity of your keen fashion sense!
