Rise in car insurance due to Written-off car deals
In the present times, the need to consult car insurance companies has risen rapidly. More of written-off cars are seen back on roads because drivers are keen in cheaper driving. DVLA recorded around 105000 written-off cars on the road last year, which far exceeded the number of written-off cars in 2007. Usually, insurance firms “write-off” those cars whose repair costs is greater than their prices. Legally, severely damaged cars that fall under category B and A write-offs are completely excluded from the driving zones.
Category C cars can undergo repair and are permitted back to the road despite extensive damage. Such cars need to be registered to DVLA, under the section ‘previously dismantled and repaired’. However, the most serious concern for credulous drivers are write-offs of category D. These cars are the least damaged, and can be repaired and sold to inexperienced drivers without real checks. Moreover, such cars do not even require MOT inspection if the present certificate holds validity.
Sellers usually do not disclose the history of such cars to their customers. Consequently, DVLA cannot estimate the exact number of these cars in UK, as there are no records that can verify whether the car has been written-off.
The actual problem surfaces when buyers make claims on the insurance of such written-off cars, many of which are not completely insured. According to the director of swiftcover.com, it is always enticing to purchase a written-off car due to its cheap price however; the expenses of repairing the same car are always expensive. This is because original repairs of such written-off cars are usually not done properly. As a result, these cars have greater insurance risk and drivers may run out of funds, paying the premiums. Car insurance companies provide discounts on some selective policies. In order to avoid excess costs of running a car, it is advisable to compare car insurance and get cheap insurance deals.
