Help! I Can’t Decide Which Maine Car Insurance Company to Use!

Doesn’t it seem like there are too many choices for something as simple and necessary as your car insurance?

When it comes to choosing your car insurance you want to make sure you’ve got the crème de la crème of the insurance industry keeping you safe out on the highway. But with over fifty major Maine car insurance providers to choose from, how on earth are you supposed to know which are crème and which are the curdles floating at the top of the cup?

As an average consumer it’s almost impossible to distinguish between a strong, reliable company that’s going to take good care of you and your car and the company that’s going to take your premiums and leave you jumping through hoops when the time comes to file a claim. You don’t usually have access to all the insider information about these Maine car insurance companies, like which ones have managers that really care about their customers and trained customer service and claims assessors and which ones will grab the first Joe Schmoe they see on the street, give him five minutes of training and put him at the head of their call center.

Needless to say, Joe Schmoe doesn’t rack up a lot of customer appreciation points in a year.

There are a few things that you as a car insurance shopper can look for when you’re deciding which company should be covering your car. First and foremost, we’re assuming if you’re reading this article that you have access to a computer with a web connection and, as a result, have the entire Internet at your disposal. The best way to judge an insurance provider is to do a little homework before you start signing your checks. You can almost guarantee that if a company has enough black strikes against them to discourage you from buying a policy from them it’s going to be all over the web.

Consumer reviews are a beautiful thing.

The next thing you want to find out is whether or not an insurance company you’re considering is actually licensed to do business in each state. You don’t necessarily have to choose a company with a Maine insurance license, but it’s a good idea. That way if you have a problem for one reason or another you can contact the Maine Bureau of Insurance and they can help you out.

Choose a car insurance company that the experts have declared to be financially sound-in other words, one that’s likely to stay in business for a while rather than going bankrupt and leaving you with unpaid claims! A.M. Best, Fitch, Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s all carry ratings on the major insurance providers. They’re going to be an excellent source of information for you when it comes to finding out the truth about your insurance provider’s finances.

(Never take an insurance company’s word for it when it comes to their financial ratings. Find out for yourself.)

If you’re not sure that your insurance company is licensed to do business in your state, contact the Maine Bureau of Insurance. They keep an updated listing and should be able to tell you how current their licensing is. If a company tells you their license is pending, politely say no thank you-you never know if they’re telling the truth, and if they are they’re still going to be in business next year.

The level of service you receive when you’re comparing car insurance quotes is usually a fairly accurate representation of the service you’re going to get the rest of the time, so it’s good to take that into consideration when you’re deciding whether or not to buy. (Of course, if you got the poor agent doing their first day on the phones it’s good to be merciful and give them the benefit of the doubt. Everyone has to learn some time.) Remember, when you’ve been in an accident, your car’s been stolen or your pride and joy has become somebody’s graffiti canvas, you want a company that’s going to make you feel comfortable and handle your claims with efficiency.

Not one that’s going to leave you wishing you’d decided to become an uninsured motorist after all.

Of course you’re going to want to consider the car insurance rates these Maine car insurance providers have to offer, but dollar signs shouldn’t be the only signs that tell you whether or not you made the right choice. Take the time to do your homework ahead of time and you’ll have a best odds chance of choosing a company with whom you’ll be able to have a good, stable and inexpensive relationship for years to come.
