Do You Know What Getting Married’s Going to Do to Your Car Insurance Rates?
They say if you’re married in June you’re a bride all your life. As dreamy and romantic as getting married in June might sound there are some very non-romantic, occasionally nightmarish things you’re going to have to worry about along with saying your I do’s. For example, whether Aunt Elsie and Uncle Harry are going to kill each other if you let them sit on the same side of the aisle. If you can afford to buy a bigger apartment that will hold both of you. And how much it’s going to cost you to go in together on a joint car insurance policy.

It’s very, very rare to find a husband and wife that don’t share a car insurance policy, mostly because by the time you have children you have to share the family car/truck/minivan to shuffle you all around! Of course, practicality is probably going to be your major reason for going in together on a car insurance policy. The fiscal benefits of sharing a policy are just a very, very nice side affect!
How much do you think it would cost you and your new spouse to maintain separate insurance policies, especially if you’re using different car insurance companies? $200 a month? $300? If you’ve put off getting married until after you finished college and started your career you might be able to take advantage of your insurance company’s good driver discounts; however, if you’re a young driver married in the blush of love your insurance is probably going cost an arm and a leg as it is.
Do you really want to multiply that by two?
By sharing a policy with your new, lawfully wedded significant other you’ll be able to consolidate your assets, and nine times out of ten it’s a LOT cheaper to put the two of you together under a single coverage than to try and maintain them both separately. Car insurance companies offer a discount for things like that! And by working together you can benefit from each other’s good driving record. One good driver on a car’s policy can bring the other’s insurance rates down.
Of course, that goes both ways. If you have an impeccable driving record and your new husband or wife has a black mark or two (or ten) on their license you’re going to be paying a little extra to keep them covered. Make sure you’re cool with that.
If you want to bring your car insurance rates down even farther, consider signing both of you up for a driving safety course. Think of it as a bonding experience! You can go, take the driver’s safety course, make fun of the instructor, the driving videos (could they get any more grade school?) and your fellow classmates, many of whom are there for many less noble reasons than trying to save money, and you can walk away with some great savings on your car insurance.
When you say “I do” you’re signing up for the ride of your life. Make that ride as cheap as possible by doing everything you can to shave money off your car insurance rates.
Who knows? You might be able to afford that second honeymoon in Tahiti after all…
