Be Ye Ware! Steer Clear of the Murky Mess That Comes When You Start Mixing Contractors and Your Arizona Home Insurance
With winter crawling up around the corner it’s time to make sure that your house is ready for stormy weather, and if you didn’t do it over the summer it might be time to do it now-touch base with a professional contractor and make sure your windows, roof and flooring are shored up and ready to go. It’s a good idea in theory, but before you start signing on the bottom line for anything it’s a good idea to check in and see how your Arizona home insurance is going to take it!
And no, I’m not going to keep talking like a pirate. That would just get annoying after a while.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. When it comes to your home insurance it’s all about relative risk. If you’re at a high risk to have to file a home insurance claim(s) you’re going to have to pay higher home insurance rates. You may also find that they crack the whip a little harder on exactly how much they’re willing to pay for your repairs, which is going to be the problem that’s going to pop up when you start tossing a contractor into the mix.
When you’re tearing out walls and exposing electrical wires you’re going to raise the chances that your home insurance is going to have to pay out a claim courtesy of fire or flooding. You’re also leaving parts of your home exposed to the elements, and if that gets damaged while they’re working on it you’re going to find yourself with a pretty hefty bill to pay, since no Arizona home insurance company that I know of is going to touch that with a ten foot pole.
Although it’s always good to talk to your insurance agent beforehand, just in case.
If you’re going to be giving your home a major overhaul this winter (or even a minor one) you’re going to

Your contractor should be licensed with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. |
want to make sure you’re covered if disaster decides to strike. The first step to doing that is to do a little homework before you sign on the dotted line to hire a contractor. Why? Because most contractors carry their own insurance, which will pick up the slack if they make a mistake that does major damage to your house. Your Arizona home insurance company is also going to want to know that you’re working with a registered contractor. It makes them feel better about insuring both the process and the repairs if they know you’ve got a contractor who knows what they’re doing!
Before repairs begin, let your Arizona home insurance provider know that they’re going to be going on, exactly what they’re going to be doing and how long you expect repairs to take. There’s a special type of home insurance coverage that will cover you during that period where your regular insurance policy usually won’t, and the two will segue together so neatly that you’ll never find yourself holding the bag for home insurance claims that aren’t covered.
A few well placed phone calls and a little bit of legwork will put you in an excellent position to be as prepared as possible when the time comes to get your home ready for the rough winter winds.
