Motor insurers must tackle affordability for young drivers, warns Defaqto

Financial research company Defaqto is urging car insurance providers to introduce and encourage measures that will bring down young driver car insurance premiums.

The independent researcher has published a white paper explaining how motor insurers can control risk in the young driver market, and exploring whether the next step could be preventing insurers from structuring their prices around age.

The paper advises motor insurers to support early education schemes that promote safe driving practices among the next generation of motorists and initiatives designed to improve intelligence gathering on young driver habits using telematic technology.

It also urges insurers to address the issue of fronting (when a parent insures a childs car in their own name but adds their child the real main driver to the policy to keep costs down) during the risk-gathering process to prevent fraudulent claims.

Mike Powell, Defaqtos insight analyst for general insurance, comments: If premiums continue to increase within the young driver segment of the motor insurance market, we could see regulatory intervention to control price.

However, removing age as an underwriting factor would have a major impact on the pricing and underwriting capability of all motor insurers.

To take advantage of the opportunities offered by the already challenging young driver market, insurers need to find a solution to the affordability issue while ensuring they do not take excessive risk onto their books.

Defaqto data shows demand for uninsured driver protection

Analysis from independent financial research company Defaqto shows that 17% of comprehensive car insurance policies will protect a policyholders no-claims discount or apply an excess if they are involved in an accident caused by an uninsured driver. This figure has increased from 13% of policies in 2009.

The survey showed that protection against uninsured drivers is the most highly valued feature of car insurance policies.

Not having excesses applied if the driver is involved in an accident caused by an uninsured driver was the feature that people regarded as the second most valuable asset.

Mike Powell, Defaqtos insight analyst for general insurance, said: Our research has found that a growing number of motor insurance policies offer enhanced protection for accidents caused by uninsured drivers.

However, it is also true to say that a relatively limited proportion of policies offer this feature, and most apply fairly stringent criteria when it comes to making a claim under this area of cover.

As always, people should seek to match what they need from car insurance with the features that different policies provide when comparing whats available on the market.
